Spiritual vs. Godly

Ever noticed our Christian traditions and rules that automatically 'make us good Christians'? They make us appear to be pursuing God, but many times they're just man-made ways to be 'Christian'.

Here's some Spiritual things we Americans do:
We go to church and youth group.
We read our Bibles.
We don't listen to secular music.
We don't listen to rap/metal etc.
We pray before our meals.
We give 10%.
We don't drink.
We don't cuss.

Some of these rules and traditions are very good! But this is not what being a Christian is!

So here's some Godly things we need to focus on more:
Loving God.
Loving others.

What are some 'spiritual' things you do in your life that give you a false sense of pleasing God?

Wow...that is so true! Christians can totally get caught up in all the "rules" they have to follow that they forget why they are setting their standards so high. Is it to make people think they are "good" and spiritual, or is it to strive to please God in everything they do?

  1. Good post.

I Tim 1:5 talks about "the GOAL of our instruction"....

I can only wish Christians gave 10%...

    sigh.

I think that one reason people are 'afraid' of Christianity is because we seem to have so many rules!!! If we could just love people more, like Jesus did, then we would be serving him way more.

Sometimes I worry when people ask me what curch I go to and I have to say, "none" that people won't think me or my family are "godly" people. But the only reason we dont go to church is.. there are none!
That's a good thought Kade... I think I've been learning a lot about this kind of thing in the last year. Thanks for the great post!

You're right Kade. We do need to focus more on loving God and others, because God is love. :)

Have you heard about the new Christian film called The Grace Card? My family and I went to see it in the theater on opening weekend. If you haven't heard of it, or seen it you should really check it out (http://www.thegracecardmovie.com/). It was an awesome movie!! :) It's about loving others, even when we don't want to.

Truth. This is a really good post, Kade. I'm so guilty of being "spiritual" sometimes.

God's love is radical and crazy... He's who we're representing!

    Thanks for this!
