Be Thou my Vision, O Lord of my heart;

Naught be all else to me, save that Thou art.
Thou my best Thought, by day or by night,
Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light

-Dallan Forgaill

Twas grace that taught my heart to fear
and grace my fears relieved
how precious did that grace appear
the hour i first believed
-John Newton

Crown  him with many crowns
The lamb upon his throne
Hark! how the heavenly anthem drowns all music but its own
Awake my soul and sing!
Of him who died for me
And hail him as the matchless King through all eternity.
-Matthew Bridges
No more livin in the darkness,
no more livin heartless
cause you got that Holy Spirit
dwellin inside your carcass
You're life's been changed up
rearranged up, you've been reborn
and you don't have to do the same stuff
you live regenerate
you get the benefit
of Christ crucified
but you gotta live in it
God is preeminent
forgiveness is unlimited,
but stop! and...
REPRESENT.
-Lecrae

Hey what you know about this God?

He's way too great homie, I can't grasp Him

Hey what you know about this God?

He's too complex my mind can't fathom
What you know about this God?
He's amazing, behold Him, I praise Him, He's golden
Hey what you know about this God?
He's INEXHAUSTIBLE, I'm amazed just to know Him

-Trip Lee

I'm not that impressive, matter of fact

I'm who I are: a trail of stardust leading to the superstar

-Lecrae

These are just some examples. Anybody's perspective change?? I've found lately that I like a few hymns like 'Tis so Sweet to Trust in Jesus' and 'Crown Him with Many Crowns'.

But the question is...

Which is better? Christian rap or Hymns? You decide!

'Be Thou My Vision' is one of my favorite hymns!!! So I find it hard to compare it to rap....Christian or not.

Anywho, I think hymns vs. rap depends on the person: the rap might witness to some people, while hymns work better with others. So, I believe it just depends on the person. (:

i personally [love] lecrae. favorite lyrics [right now that is..]

"Christ rebelled by shunnin' the culture. He eatin' with the sinners givin' Pharisees ulcers. Never got married He was broke plus homeless. yeah, that's the God i roll with."

"Her beauty is a Godliness. and she ain't gotta flaunt it 'cause it's obvious."

oh yes. lecrae is the bombbb :)

but i still love hymns, too. tis so sweet, Jesus paid it all, and come thy fount of every blessing.

Personally I've heard better rap lyrics than hymns, but vice versa too. Though I know I'd rather listen to rap than hymns.

"I don't need my name in lights, I don't need a starring role
Why gain the whole wide world,
If I'm just going lose my soul?
    And my ways ain't purified,
don't live according to Your Word
I can't endure this life without Your wisdom being heard. . .

Yo, I had a dream that I was captain of my soul
I was master of my fate, lost control, and then I sank
So I don't want to take the lead, 'cause I'm prone to make mistakes
So just let me shadow you, just let me trace your lines
Matter of fact, just take my pen, here, YOU CREATE MY RHYMES,
'Cause if I do this by myself, I'm scared that I'll succeed
And no longer trust in You, 'cause I only trust in me"

For me it totally depends on the song and the words...I definitely would choose listening to Christian rap over Christian rock ( like Skillet for example;)...but rap over hymns? Hmmm....I just can't envision angels rapping in Heaven. I'm not saying it's bad...I mean the words can be awesome! That's a hard one for me...

I think the two main reasons that I personally would pick Hymns over rap is 1)it is more pleasing to listen to and 2) the connotation you get by listening to rap music is that you are listening to a song that is littered with bad language and other "bad stuff". I agree with Hayley that I can't imagine Angels in Heaven rapping, it's an image that doesn't seem to fit.

Again, personally, I believe that music should be not only pleasing to listen to, but refreshing to the soul. When you listen or sing along with Hymns, you can feel your soul rejoicing or (if it's a different kind of Hymn) you are repentive. When I listen to rap, all I can really think about is guys doing gang signs, and doing things that aren't glorifying Him.

This is all what I feel and believe, I'm open to discussion! :)

For me it depends on the words. There some Hymns that have words that are so not... just not good, or that don't make sense! And the same with rap, or any contemporary Christian song. It depends on the lyrics. Rap isn't my style haha. But this you already know! ;)

This is a tough topic that I'm really glad you're posting about! Personally, I think most hymns have wonderful lyrics that are truth-saturated. However, singing or hearing a hymn usually just doesn't do much for me. Of course it totally depends on the lyrics and song, but when I listen to Christian rap or other contemporary Christian music, that's what I feel like draws me closer to Christ and makes me come alive!

Worship music is basically my life, I spend a lot of time doing that. Honestly, the times when I'm closest to God are when I'm worshiping through contemporary/pop Christian music (again- lyrics make ALL the difference. If it's a shallow song, forget it.).

Looking forward to hearing more on this!
Either way, OUR GOD IS WORTHY! Never stop worshiping!!!
